Dairy can have a preventive effect on diabetes

The consumption of dairy can have a preventive effect on diabetes type 2 and play a role in its treatment. This was confirmed in the new Guidelines for a healthy diet and the Diabetes Dietary Guidelines 2015.

The new Guidelines for a healthy diet from the Health Council of the Netherlands recommend a few servings of dairy per day. The Health Council states that the consumption of 60 grams or more of yogurt per day corresponds with an approximate 15% lower risk for diabetes type 2. The Health Council considers the evidence for this link to be strong. In its appendix on dairy for the Guidelines, the Health Council provides more information about the scientific research.

One of the recommendations in the Diabetes Dietary Guidelines 2015 is to limit the intake of products which contain saturated fats and to replace these with products with mono- or polyunsaturated fats. An exception is made for dairy products. Recent reviews have indicated that high dairy intake is inversely related to and thus preventive of diabetes type2.
