NZO concerned about foot-and-mouth outbreak in Germany

The Dutch Dairy Association (NZO) is troubled by the discovery of foot-and-mouth disease in the German state of Brandenburg. Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious animal disease that can have major consequences for dairy farming and other parts of the food chain. The NZO urges all involved to follow advice from authorities to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus in the Netherlands.

This week, NZO members will forgo farm visits, meetings with livestock farmers, and participation in trade fairs, such as the Grüne Woche or other events.

Foot-and-mouth disease is not dangerous to humans. The outbreak, therefore, does not affect the safety of milk or dairy products. Dutch dairy companies only process milk from healthy animals, and milk is always pasteurized after it has been delivered, which inactivates any pathogens. Incidentally, Dutch dairy companies do not import milk from dairy farms in the affected state of Brandenburg.
