Primary schools visit dairy farms

The Dutch Dairy Association’s farm education program started up again this week! This spring and fall, more than 25,000 children in groups 7 and 8 will get to see where milk comes from and what life on the farm is like.

Students from the Sabina van Egmond elementary school in Oud-Beijerland visited the dairy farm of Cees and Miranda van der Wekken in Maasdam today, marking the start of the 2015 farm tour season! The tours are part of the farm education program of the Dutch Dairy Organization (Nederlandse Zuivel Organisatie, or NZO), which works to teach kids where our food, like milk, comes from.

The children from group 7 from the Sabina van Egmond school came well prepared. They had already gone over the lesson materials in class, and they already knew, for example, that milk can be made into yogurt or cheese. They also knew which nutrients in milk and dairy products are important to their growth.

The farm education program is funded by ZuivelNL and is organized by the NZO. Every year across the Netherlands, the NZO organizes farm tours for 25,000 elementary school children in groups 7 and 8. Dairy farmers around the country are selected and given trainings to participate in the program.
