Dairy in the new Wheel of Five: milk, cheese and yogurt

Today the Netherlands Nutrition Centre confirmed dairy’s importance as part of a healthy diet. Dairy is included in one of the five sections in the new Wheel of Five (Schijf van Vijf), along with fish, legumes, meat, nuts and eggs. In the new Wheel of Five, the Nutrition Centre recommends daily consumption of skim and low-fat dairy products. These can be substituted by whole dairy products a few times a week.

It is worth noting that in the new Wheel of Five, dairy has been given its own sub-section. The design displays a carton of milk, a cup of yogurt and a slice of cheese next to a cheese slicer.

The new Wheel of Five is based on the 2015 Dietary Guidelines from the Dutch Health Council, which was presented in November of last year. The Health Council issued its guidelines for dairy: “Eat a few servings of dairy every day, making sure to include milk or yogurt.”
