TTIP gives the Dutch dairy sector a chance to grow exports

The negotiations for the trade agreement between the European Union and the United States (TTIP) cover a wide range of topics. The Dutch Dairy Association is aware of the public discussion taking place in light of these negotiations.

If the trade agreement succeeds, the Dutch dairy sector may be able to strengthen its position on the American market. In the coming years, the US is expected to import more dairy – the Dutch dairy sector can profit from this.

High standards are imposed on dairy products in both the United States and the European Union. There are a few differences between the quality regulations, however, which hinder the export of dairy products from the EU. A trade agreement would remove these differences, making it easier for Dutch dairy companies to export their products to the US, particularly dairy ingredients and pasteurized milk and products.

Dutch exports to the US have grown in recent years. In 2015, the Netherlands exported 122 million euros in dairy products to the US – mainly cheese. In 2010, exports amounted to only 58 million euros. Total Dutch dairy exports in 2015 came to 6.6 billion euros.
